Coding in Kindergarten

Below you will find my final project for EDIM 516 on teaching coding in kindergarten.  Coding is increasing in popularity in schools, however mainly in middle schools and high schools.  There have been many new apps and programs developed lately to teach kids as young as kindergarteners to code via games that incorporate visual blocks.  I piloted some of the programs in my own classroom and found they were easy enough to follow both for English only and ELL students.

Some great coding sources for kindergarteners are:
Scratch Jr.
Tynker
Hopscotch

Enjoy!

  1. Kathryn,

Thank you for the video and curation! It was interesting to hear about coding being women’s work. My grandmother was an early coder, putting her library’s reference catalogue on a database. (She was a college reference librarian). Another thing for people to know about coding being an “elective”… It’s now a required pre-requisite for some bachelor programs, including engineering. At this point I really do think it’s prudent for all students to have some exposure. Thanks again! -melissa
